Ground Ivy in early spring

Ground Ivy, also known as Creeping Charlie, has a wonderful minty smell when mown, which happens quite often as it commonly pops up in lawns. It was introduced to North America by European settlers who used it to brew ale and make medicines. Galen used it to treat inflammation of the eyes. Today’s herbalists may recommend it to clear out the sinuses or help with hearing. Some consider it an invasive weed, but it is quite beautiful with scalloped leaves and purple flowers, attracts wild bees, and makes a lively accent to salads. .
